The royals have, generally, encouraged Brits to get vaccinated. In January, Queen Elizabeth released the Travis scott graphic shirt and I love this news of her shot at Windsor Castle. A month later, the monarch participated in a video call with health officials spearheading the U.K. vaccine rollout, noting that hers was “very quick” and “didn’t hurt at all.” Prince William and Kate Middleton went on to share photo documentation when they got their shots in May. “To all those working on the vaccine rollout—thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do,” William, the Duke of Cambridge, tweeted. But none have commented on vaccine equity as it relates to their “global family” of the Commonwealth; the disparity between the U.K., where 67% of people are fully vaccinated, according to a New York Times data tracker, and African Commonwealth countries, like Cameroon and Kenya, where only 0.3% and 1.6% percent of people, respectively, can say the same. India—a Commonwealth member where the royals embark on public tours—experienced a deadly surge this past spring, setting new global records for single-day infection rates. The inequity is glaring in some of the 16 Commonwealth “realms” that still recognize the queen as their head of state: Only 0.5% of people in Papua New Guinea are fully vaccinated, 3.5% in the Solomon Islands, 7% in Jamaica, and 12% in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
